A center for the evolution of consciousness. Matagiri is located on 40 acres of forested hillside in the Catskill Mountains near Woodstock, New York, staffed by a small residential community and an extended family of members. Visitors benefit from facilities designed for contemplation and creativity, research and study. Our activities include meditation, talks, performances and educational programs related to the teaching of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and the international community of Auroville.

The name Matagiri means "Mother's Mountain" in Sanskrit. Founded by Sam Spanier and Eric Hughes in 1968, it has served the community of as a residential center, library, importer of Ashram products such as the handmade paper and incense, publisher and distributor of Sri Aurobindo and Mother's books, and hosted numerous visitors.

At this serene mountain retreat center, all those who aspire towards an integral transformation of mind, life and body can come for reflection and renewal, immersed in an atmosphere that fosters positive action, service, inner awareness and growth.

Though we don't have overnight guests, we are happy to send a list of local accommodations.
Matagiri is now in a new phase under the stewardship of Matagiri Sri Aurobindo Center, a 501 c 3 non profit organization.
