Rock Climbing
Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center Located just 90 miles north of New York City, the Mohonk Preserve provides visitors with scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and peace and quiet. At the Preserve, you can enjoy 6,500 acres in the Shawangunk Mountains–including cliffs, forests, fields, ponds, and streams–and a network of 70 miles of carriage roads and trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. The internationally renowned “Gunks†cliffs offer over 1,000 technical rock climbing routes. From the Preserve, visitors can also hike, bike, ski, and ride onto a broader network of carriage roads and trails along the Shawangunk Ridge. The Mohonk Preserve is a mountain refuge for people and nature. It is a haven for wildlife, a living museum, and a sanctuary where visitors can come to reflect and be restored. The stark cliffs, exposed summits, and rocky plateaus
of the Shawangunks provide refuge for a wealth of rare and endangered plants
and animals that have adapted to these tough living conditions - including the
endangered peregrine falcon and 2,000 acres of globally rare, dwarf pitch pine,
stunted by the harsh growing conditions on the ridge.
